China’s rapid economic growth has undoubtedly greatly improved the lives of millions of Chinese citizens. Along with the economic growth, however, many challenges have arisen that threaten the recent gains. There are problems that are already evident, such as indirect effects of urbanization and climate change. However, we must also acknowledge that problems, often those we cannot predict or foresee, will continue to arise. Resolving these issues benefits not only China but the entire international community. As such, the field of policy studies will prove essential as China looks to build stronger relationships with international partners and to address current and future issues.
Policy studies research can support the policymaking process by providing necessary background information and well-informed evaluations of the likely effects of a given policy. The efficacy of policy studies is not limited to solving pressing problems. Policy studies can also play a major role in shaping innovative policy that is beneficial both domestically and internationally.. Strategies for world economic development, innovative solutions to environmental issues, and framework to guide international joint efforts to combat world poverty benefit not only China but the world, and are, therefore, of particular interest to the Academy.
The mission of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Think Tank Foundation is to sponsor and support research initiatives in the social sciences that would benefit both China and the international community. Of particular interest to the Academy currently are Belt and Road Initiative projects, migrant population, environmental protection, income inequality and regional development gaps, penalty system, domestic security, and religion.
