Shortly after the conclusion of the G20 Summit in Argentina, the 2018 Latin American Symposium of the World Forum on China Studies was held on December 3rd-4th in Buenos Aires. The Latin American symposium is the fourth consecutive World Forum on China Studies symposium to be held outside of China; it follows the 2015 symposium held in the U.S., the 2016 symposium held in South Korea, and the 2017 symposium held in Germany. The symposium consisted of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), the Institute of Latin American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (ILAS-CASS), the Shanghai Institute of Social Sciences Think Tank Foundation (SASS TTF), the Argentine Council for International Relations (CARI), and the National University of La Plata, Argentina (NULP) and co-sponsored by the ICBC Foundation and NULP.
Zhang Daogen, dean of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, gave an overview of how including Latin America in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is to the mutual benefit of both China and Latin America in his speech titled “Theoretical and Practical Significance: The Latin American Forum of China Studies Forum takes the G20 Argentina Summit as an Opportunity to Explore the Process of China’s Reform and Opening UP and the Belt and Road Initiative and the Development of China-Latin American Cooperation, Which Is in Line with the Current International Political and Economic Situation.”
